Στο "Απτάλικο", έναν χώρο που τα τελευταία δέκα χρόνια υποστηρίζει έντιμα και με αξιοπρέπεια το λαϊκό και το ρεμπέτικο τραγούδι, ηχογραφήθηκαν δύο βραδιές με τον παλιό, αυθεντικό και παραδοσιακό τρόπο: ζωντανά.

Δύο καλλιτέχνες, που ο καθένας απ’ το δικό του μετερίζι, με ήθος και συνέπεια επί τρεις και πλέον δεκαετίες υπηρετούν τη λαϊκή μας παράδοση, ο Δημήτρης Κοντογιάννης και ο Γιώργος Ξηντάρης, έδωσαν δείγματα υψηλής ερμηνευτικής ικανότητας, όπως κάθε βράδυ, και απέδειξαν ότι μόνο μουσειακά δεν είναι τα τραγούδια που θα ακούσετε.

Ευχάριστη έκπληξη της δισκογραφικής αυτής δουλειάς είναι η παρουσία του Τόλη Χάρμα, που εμφανίζεται μετά από τέσσερις περίπου δεκαετίες, με ένα καινούργιο δικό του τραγούδι, αλλά και με δύο παλιά. Ένας «νέος 88 ετών», όπως ο ίδιος συστήνεται, παραδίδει μαθήματα καλλιτεχνικής συμπεριφοράς.

Ο δίσκος περιλαμβάνει συνθέσεις των Τούντα, Βαμβακάρη, Δελιά, Νταλκά, Παπαϊωάννου, Μητσάκη, Τσιτσάνη, Χιώτη, Χάρμα, Μπακάλη και άλλων, έργα που αντέχουν για πάνω από μισό αιώνα, αποδεικνύοντας την αξία τους με τη διαχρονικότητά τους.

Πολλοί φίλοι του blog (Έλληνες Της Διασποράς) μου ζήτησαν που και που να γράφουμε κάτι και στα Αγγλικά ή τουλάχιστον να μεταφράζουμε κάποια πράγματα. Προσπαθώντας να τους ευχαριστήσω παραθέτω αυτούσια την κρητική του Ray Templeton:

Mourmoúrika: Songs of the Greek Underworld, of prison cells and hashish dens, of the streets, of thieving, of addiction, of desire and betrayal. Songs made up of couplets from the common stock and improvisations on them, later used by more sophisticated musicians as a basis for their work. Some of the fines, and rarest, pieces in the Rembetica discography fall into the category and are included in this collection." --Rounder

The Mourmourika of the title are songs of the mourmourides. This was a term originating in Constantinople, meaning hard-men (the literal translation is grumblers), and these songs seem to represent a thread of rembetika with particular characteristics, many of them harking back to an earlier time - illustrated in the Turkish derivation of the term. One such characteristic was that many of the songs were, to quote the booklet’s notes: 'made up of couplets from the common stock and improvisations on them'. Some of these couplets, I suspect, may have been of quite ancient derivation, and may even share a common source with lines that crop up elsewhere in European tradition. One example that sounds familiar, in shape, if not in exact words, is:

I wish I was a needle on the sand
So you’d tread on me and get pricked
I wish I was a young plant in the ground
So you’d pick me for your pride and joy

... from Ta Disticha Tou Manga (The Dude’s Song) by the rather obscure Spachanis. Having said that, many of the lyrics cover the usual picaresque ground of the rembetes: gun fights with the police, smoking the argile (hashish pipe), languishing in jail or cursing your fate at the hands of a dark-eyed temptress. Think of rembetica (indeed, think of Greek music) and the chances are that many people will be thinking of the bouzouki, and rightly so - it features on most tracks on My Only Consolation. But the guitar was popular, too, often providing a chordal rhythm accompaniment but also, in the right hands, a lead instrument that was able to express the spirit of the music almost as effectively as the bouzouki. The guitar is featured very strongly on Mourmourika, most impressively in the hands of Spyros Peristeris and the wonderful Yiorgos Katsaros. The former plays a fast single string lead style, creating beautiful, expressive vibrato effects with the left hand fingers, and trills on the right. He is also credited with bouzouki on a few tracks, and the photograph of him in the booklet shows him with a mandolin, so he was evidently as versatile as he was skilled. His playing behind the vocals of Zacharias Kasimatis on O Mangas Tou Votanikou is especially fine. Katsaros’s finger-picking style makes more use of harmonies, and seems more European in orientation. He only has one appearance here (from quite a late session, in New York, 1947) but it’s a beauty. Actually, though, to single out tracks is pointless - the music here is of such consistently exceptional quality.

Byzantium, Constantinople, Istanbul, by whatever name it has been known, this great city bestriding the Bosphorus where Europe meets Asia was, until the rise of Kemalism and modern Turkey in the 1920's, a truly cosmopolitan, polyglot melting pot of many races and cultures. During the later years of the Ottoman Empire there were born in this city two of the twentieth century's outstanding singers of vernacular music. One Greek, the other Turkish, both the inheritors of rich and ancient tradition.

Historically, Istanbul has always been a land where cultures met (and clashed). Great Voices of Constantinople takes a point/counterpoint angle in its showcase of two vernacular music greats, Andonis Diamandidis, or Dalgas, and Hafiz Burhan Sesyilmaz. Dalgas, a Greek, specialized in the "amane," an unmetered song consisting of single couplets, while the Turkish Burhan was more a cantor, but also tackled the amane. Dalgas alone cut over 400 sides for the Greek HMV catalog between 1926 and 1933, and Burhan's numerous Columbia 78's are a testimony to his fame at the time. On this CD, both performers shine, with Dalgas providing some truly interesting lyrics--the translation to "Mia Smyrnia Stin Kokkinia" reads like the vocals of a ragtime number--and Burhan showcasing some truly inspiring backing instrumentation. As a bonus of sorts, one of the best cuts is a total wildcard: a frenetic 1930 "Kemani Cevdet Bey" instrumental track, thrown in for good measure.

Since I'm partially Greek and have been interested in music from this part of the world for quite a long time, I was thrilled to find this CD in a specialized store in Amsterdam. Andonis Dalgas and Hafiz Burhan - A Greek and a Turk, both famous singers from Constantinople during the twenties and thirties - alternate in singing heart-felt songs in traditional style, with a wide variety of rythms and melodic modes. It is interesting to hear that their music has a lot in common and has clear differences at the same time. Somehow the Greek ''Manes'' (a long, drawn-out love song, derived from Arabic and Persian music) seem to be more based on functional harmony, and sometimes sound more ''Western'' in this aspect. At the same time the modality and the rich ornamentation remind you of the fact that the Greeks seem to be musical transition figures, somehow caught between East and West, which I find fascinating. The Turkish music seems to be less occupied with harmony, and is thrilling melodicaly and rythmically. Hafiz Burhan makes a thrilling adventure out of every song, fast or slow. Both he and Andonis Dalgas were astounding vocal artists, virtuosic and highly expressive at the same time. It is also interesting to compare the subject matters (the booklit provides the songtexts in the original language and English): whereas Dalgas sings of dying consumptives, murder and drugs, Burhan seems mainly occupied with his seductive, irresistible objects of passion, and his songs are generally more positive. I would advice anyone who is historically interested in Greek and Turkish music to buy this CD - it is a wonderfull document that grows on you more everytime you listen to it.
